  NETWORKING BY ALL PC WORK

NETWORKING BY ALL PC WORK

What is a computer network and how does it benefit me?

Computer networking is simply two or more computers that are connected, have services or information to share, and use a set of rules by which to communicate. These three components allow computers to share things like a printer, a high-speed Internet connection, or files such as MP3s. With several computers sharing a printer, there is no need to buy a printer for each computer, saving you money. You can also make one computer your primary machine for storing data. With all data coming from one computer, you have only one drive to backup, making for faster and easier administration.

ALL PC WORK can set up or reconfigure your network for you.

ALL PC WORK can design and set up a wired or wireless network that meets your needs. We can create custom permissions that will lock out users from information you do not wish them to be able to access. Likewise, we can give other users access to that information. We can configure devices to be shared, such as printers. We secure all new networks that we setup, and can secure your current network as well.

I can see computers on my network that are not mine. What does that mean?

There is much more to networking then just hooking two computers together, especially if their connection to one another is wireless. Wireless, as the name implies, makes the sharing of information and services possible without any connecting wires or cables. But this opens up many new possibilities for others to ease-drop on your data, steal your bandwidth, or even worse, access the data on your computer. People that who live in apartments are especially vulnerable. This is true because of the close proximity of their neighbors, resulting in overlapping networks with strong signals.

I do not live in an apartment building. Is my wireless network safe?

Just because you may not live in an apartment, does not mean your network is not viewable by others. We have set up many wireless networks in homes where the houses are fairly far apart. Once we have the connection up, we can see what networks are available to us. There is usually at least one other network other then the one we setup. And even if your neighbors are too far away to get your signal, do not have a wireless network, or you trust them explicitly, you are still vulnerable from a common practice called “WarDriving”. WarDriving is nothing more then driving around looking for wireless networks, and then trying to tap into them. Why would someone do this? For some it is nothing more then fun, but for others it is a way to gain access to your passwords, account information and any other personal information they can get. They may be able to gain enough information to steal your identity. You may be more familiar with a similar technique where thieves drive around stealing mail out of mailboxs. The purpose is to get credit cards, and other account information that will allow them to steal from you.

I have a wired network; does this mean I am safe?

Wired networks by nature, are more secure then wireless. This is because there is no broadcasting of the signal into the air. Your data only goes down wires that are connected to your network. You still want to secure your files from other computers and users that are on your network, whether it is to keep the kids out of your computer files, or to only allow access to employees that need it. Keeping customer data secure means keeping it secure from unauthorized employees as well as hackers. Most data breaches are inside jobs that come from ex-employees that still has access to the network, or current employees that are snooping around to see what they can find. Locking down your network can prevent these serious security breaches.

How can I protect my network?

ALL PC WORK can set up or change your network to lock out others while still allowing access to those to whom who you grant permission. We would also recommend that you encrypt all personal data on your hard drive. This way, even if a thief gets in, or steals your computer, all data on the hard drive is useless to them. We can install and teach you how to use encryption software. Contact us and we can discuss your needs with you.
